چکیده

Victims of sexual violence are often punished by the legal system when their version incident—or fact finders' perception version—violates expected schemas. We investigated influence schemas on mock jurors' ability to accurately recognize facts presented in a hypothetical case. Participants (N = 155) read vignette depicting one four scenarios: expectancy consistent, inconsistent, no detail control, or crime control condition. then indicated whether certain evidence (e.g., victim-perpetrator relationship) was presented, and if so, what correct information was. Although participants generally demonstrated accurate recognition case evidence, errors were more likely be made inconsistent with end discussion how present research can advance our understanding underlying cognitive mechanisms victim blaming practical implications for system.

Racial bias in decisions made by mock jurors evaluating a case of sexual harassment.

White (N = 161) and Black (N = 152) college students served as mock jurors in a simulated civil case in which a female plaintiff accused a male defendant of sexual harassment. The authors experimentally manipulated the race (Black or White) of the litigants and asked the mock jurors to decide whether the defendant was guilty; to rate the certainty of their belief in the defendant's guilt; and, ...

Biased interpretation of evidence by mock jurors.

Predecisional distortion is jurors' biased interpretation of new evidence to support whichever verdict is tentatively favored as a trial progresses. In 2 experiments, students and prospective jurors distorted evidence from a mock trial. Further, the magnitude of prospective jurors' distortion was twice that of students. Consistent with previous research, distortion increased with juror confiden...

Defendant characteristics and judgment behaviors of adolescent mock jurors.

Fictitious court cases involving child abuse were presented to 140 male undergraduates and 140 male junior high school students to determine if the tendency to deal harshly with alleged criminals is dependent upon certain defendant characteristics. Results indicate that younger adolescent jurors give longer sentences than older adolescent jurors, and male defendants receive longer sentences tha...

Electronic Schematic Recognition

We demonstrate the feasibility of using image analysis for automatically converting from a scanned electronic circuit schematic to a netlist of the components and their connections. A preprocessing stage removes non-components from the image (component label and values). The image is then segmented to produce a set of graphical primitives (lines, circles, and arrows). The recognition stage uses...

Differences in expert witness knowledge: do mock jurors notice and does it matter?

The knowledge of experts presumably affects their credibility and the degree to which the trier of fact agrees with them. However, specific effects of demonstrated knowledge are largely unknown. In this experiment, we manipulated a forensic expert's level of knowledge in a mock-trial paradigm. We tested the influence of low versus high expert knowledge on mock juror perceptions of expert credib...
